The cliche' rings true; the older we get it, the faster life goes by. The days might feel long, but the years seem to get shorter. For some of us, there's more highway in the rear-view mirror than in the front windshield. All of those years making plans for the future, striving for better things, then suddenly you realize just how precious each moment really is! As the saying goes, "life is what's happening now, while you're making plans for the future". It is interested to see how some people are stuck in the past - reliving the glory days of "yesteryear", while others are continually striving for the future, working to fulfill their aspirations, hopes, and dreams.
I've learned a few things regarding a proper perspective of time, revealed in God's Word. Our focus needs to be on Today. Certainly we are called to learn from the past with gratitude, praising God for His goodness (Deuteronomy 32:7-8). We should also look to the future in faith, because the Lord has promised us a good one, complete with His hope and blessing (Jeremiah 29:11). It's fine to make plans, provided that they are yielded to God's providential plan. James 4:15 tells us that our position should look this way; "you ought to say, 'If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.'" Biblically, we are called to live for the Lord each day. In Matthew 6:11 Jesus instructed us to pray, "Give us today our daily bread", and in verse 33-34 He tells us not to worry about tomorrow, but to simply seek Him first - again, within the context of today.
The past is gone, and the future is not guaranteed - all we have for sure is right now, Today! Let's live each day fully for Jesus, and follow the instruction of the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 5:15-16; "Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk - not as unwise people but as wise - making the most of the time, because the days are evil." Enjoy this day, engage in every moment, and live your life to the full for the glory of God!
